The best-known attraction for the mountaineers is the Northern part of Pakistan, Northern Areas are knot of great mountain ranges, the Himalayas, the Karakoram, the Hindu-Kush and the Pamir with densest concentration of high peaks on earth including the Mount K-2 (8611m), second only to Everest. Radiating out to the west on the border with Afghanistan, lies the Hindu-Kush, whose eastern boundary is marked by the Ishkoman and Karumbar River in Gilgit district, the eastern end of this range is known HINDU RAJ, means “Hindu Rule”. Following north from there the PAMIR runs into the former Soviet Union. Spreading from centre to northeast along the border with China lays the KARAKORAM, the main block of the mountains in Pakistan, 250 kilometers long and 150 kilometers wide. In the south Conner separated by the Indus River where lies Western HIMALAYA and Nanga Parbat 8125m is the western end pillar of this range. These ranges have more than 350 peaks ranging from 6000m to 8611m from sea level. The most famous among them are K-2, second highest peak in the world, Nanga Parbat 8125m, the most dangerous peak and have the reputation of “ Killer Mountain” and highest cliff rock wall on the earth, Tango Group. Nowhere in the world there is such a great concentration of high mountains, peaks, glaciers and passes except Pakistan. There are five peaks out of fourteen above the 8000m in this region.









Besides high mountains these ranges are inhabited by the longest glaciers out side polar regions enchanting and captivating valleys like Hunza, Shigar, Khaplu, Ishkuman, Nalter, Gilgit, Skardu, Chitral, Dir, Kaghan, Swat and Kashmir and splendid passes like Shandur and Burzil. There are numerous glacial lakes, which are famous for their scenic value, blue waters and trout fishing. Prominent among these are Nalter, Phandur Kachura, Sadpara, Lulusar and Saif-Muluk. The main population centres are along river valleys, main ethnic groups being Baltis, Wakhis, Khowar, Hunzukut, Kohistani, Shin, Yashkun and pattens. These ranges have the rarest species of flora and fauna. The wildlife includes the snow leopard, Brown Bear, Marco Polo sheep, Markhor, Himalayan Ibex, and Urial etc.




Trekking, Mountaineering and Hiking are three main activities, which entice the adventure-minded to the North of Pakistan. In addition to adventure possibilities, which North Pakistan offers to the intending tourists the recent opening of Central Asian region has destined Northern Areas to serve as a major entry point for tours combing joint country product. The Karakorum Highway, which infect is rebuilt of Silk Route, provided a conduit to this region.

The historical background of PAKISTAN is very rich, the Mughal architecture of the 16th century, Badshahi Mosque, the Royal Fort of Akbar in Lahore and various archaeological sites of Buddah Period which dates back to the 3rd century. Gandarha Museum in Swat, Peshawar and other castles in Skardu and Hunza are worth seeing for cultural interested people. Taxila, where you can face to face with great Buddaha with Alexander of Macedonia and Ashoke the great, the Indus valley civilization flourished for four thousand and five hundred years ago. Through the ages Pakistan has been the cradle of some of the greatest civilization the world has known.
